Lutz Weisser

Founder and Managing Director of amd.sigma

A senior consultant with around 30 years industry experience, Lutz Weisser has been a specialist in airport development since 1997. He is a leader in the field and a consultant to the directors and senior management of several major international airports.

Lutz is a highly experienced consultant for strategic airport development and for airport privatisation projects across the globe. He has long-standing and broad experience of planning and managing bid proposals for high profile airport projects in Germany, Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa and South America. His knowledge of the technical side of the business is matched by his comprehensive understanding of financial processes and business planning.

Lutz is a world expert in airport privatisation, has an excellent network within the industry and has been personally advising the directors and managers of several major international airports for many years.

Prior to establishing amd.sigma, he co-founded adm (airport design management) and established offices for the company in Vienna and Berlin. In 2011, after 11 successful years with the practice, Lutz decided to concentrate on strategic development planning and founded amd.sigma to focus specifically on this aspect of the business.

Before he became involved in the airport industry, he worked as an independent consultant for BMW on real estate projects in Europe and America and as managing director of Sommer   Partner, a project management company specialised in industrial and railway infrastructure.

He holds a Ph.D. and lectured for several years at the Institute for Industrial Architecture at the Technical University of Vienna. He lived in the US for a number of years and speaks fluent English as well as his native German.

Alexander Fitzek

Partner at amd.sigma

Alexander Fitzek is a senior consultant with more than 30 years experience, including 15 years in the airport industry. He is a specialist in masterplanning, functional planning, capacity analysis and CAPEX estimation.

Alexander has three decades of experience working as a masterplanner and consultant on national and international transport projects. He has been involved in numerous successful airport privatisation bids including Guarulhos Airport (São Paulo) and Belo Horizonte Airport (also in Brazil). All in all, he brings with him experience of working on over 30 airport projects across Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa and South America.

From 2000 until he joined amd.sigma in 2013, he was part of the senior management at adm, working out of both the Vienna and Berlin offices. Prior to that he had his own architecture practice in Vienna.

Dr. Diana Zitzmann

Senior Consultant at amd.sigma

Senior consultant with over 10 years of experience, expert in user needs assessment and building planning

Dr. Diana Zitzmann is a senior consultant and our expert for user needs assessment and planning of airport buildings.
Due to her Russian language skills and her comprehensive knowledge of Russian culture, she is also responsible for projects in Russia and the former Soviet Republics at amd.sigma.

At amd.sigma, Diana Zitzmann was the project manager for the new authority and GSE buildings at Hamburg Airport, where she accompanied the user coordination including the GU tendering process. She also played a key role in the project development of Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 for Berlin Airport.

Having a doctorate in history of architecture, she published on architecture of the modern movement. Before joining amd, she worked as an architect for projects in Germany, Romania and Russia. She speaks fluent German and Russian.

Olaf Bünck

Senior Consultant at amd.sigma

A senior consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry and an expert in real estate management. He specialises in airport cities with project planning from the first sketch to the business case, and brings together creative visions and hard yield targets.

Olaf Bünck is a qualified architect and real estate expert who has made a name for himself in the airport industry from early on in his career. He founded buenck fehse in Berlin in 1994, for many years the top address for high-resolution architecture visualisations for major projects, including airports.

After over 20 years in architecture design and marketing, he turned to real estate in 2013 and completed his masters in Real Estate Management at the TU Berlin in 2015. He has been a valued member of the amd.sigma team since the summer of 2016, working in our new field of Airport Real Estate.

His specialisation is project planning for airport cities, beginning with the first architectural draught and going through user-oriented requirement analyses, CAPEX calculations and yield prognoses all the way to the construction decision.

Key career stations have taken Olaf Bünck from his native Franconia to the United Arab Emirates, Canada and the USA. He speaks fluent English, French and German.

Birger Strüfing

Senior Consultant at amd.sigma

Senior Consultant with more than fifteen years of experience in project development involving German and international airport projects as well as other infrastructure projects. Specialist for top-level strategic airport planning, with an emphasis on terminal development and flight operations areas.

Birger Strüfing is a specialist in the planning of flight operations areas, such as runways and aprons, ensuring that they comply with national, European, and international standards.

Mr. Strüfing began his career as a planner and project developer for a variety of corporate units at the Hamburg (Germany) airport. Since 2012, he has worked as a specialist and project manager at amd.sigma on airport development projects within Germany and at international locations. His background includes master planning and terminal development projects in Hamburg, Berlin, and New York as well as experience with airport privatization in Brazil, Honduras, Greece, and Cuba.

From October 2017 to November 2018, he was employed as a Senior Expert for Airport Development at the Munich International Airport. During this time, he cooperated closely with amd.sigma on terminal development for airports in New York and New Jersey as well as on privatization processes for airports in Japan and Brazil.

Since November 2018, Mr. Strüfing has been in charge of amd.sigma’s local operations in Hamburg, Germany.  In this capacity, he coordinates the company’s activities at the Hamburg Airport.

Robert Brinkmann

Senior Consultant at amd.sigma

Senior Consultant with more than five years of professional experience. Master planner and specialist for capacity planning in terminal processes, airside operations, and CAPEX calculations.

Robert Brinkmann began his career in 2008 as an aircraft mechanic at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt. In 2016, he successfully completed a Master’s degree program in Aviation Technology and Logistics at the Wildau (Germany) Institute of Technology. He has been employed at amd.sigma since 2014, first as a student worker, and then, following graduation, as a consultant.

Mr. Brinkmann has been involved in a large number of comprehensive master planning projects at airports within Germany as well as at international locations. He has also participated in capacity and feasibility studies in the Middle East, Brazil, and Cuba.

Adam Symalla

Senior Consultant at amd.sigma

Senior consultant with more than 15 years of professional experience in airport planning and management, expert planner for projects with a strong passenger focus

Adam Symalla is an internationally seasoned expert in airport planning and development. He brings in-depth knowledge of project management, airport privatisation and the digitalisation of passenger processes to the team at amd.sigma.

Most recently, Adam worked for three years as Head of Guest Experience at Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi, where he was responsible for lounge planning and guest experience strategy in the new Midfield Terminal.

Until 2016, he spent three years directing the Airports Division at Dorsch International Consultants and seven years with Hochtief AirPort (now AviAlliance), where he last worked as an asset manager at Sydney Airport.

Thanks to his project experience in Eastern Europe, Africa, Australia and the United Arab Emirates, he has a well-developed network of international contacts along with a strong intercultural skill set.

Adam graduated in industrial engineering and he holds an MBA. He is fluent in German, English and Polish.


Expert in Airport Privatisation

Dr Rudolf Burkhalter is a leading expert in airport privatisation and has acted as a consultant to many top airport executives.

Over the course of his active career, he has been involved in more than 30 bid or masterplanning projects on every continent.

From 2001 to 2010 he was head of the Planning and Consulting Department of Hochtief Airport and also acted as an executive director of the company for a number of years. He took a step back from his executive duties at the end of 2010 but continued working for Hochtief as a senior consultant. He has been with amd.sigma since the end of 2012. Dr Burkhalter is an invaluable member of our team to this day, now retired.

He previously worked in Switzerland where he specialised in project development and urban planning and managed several high profile projects. These included the planning phase of the 2 billion euro extension of Zurich Airport and major development projects for the main train stations in Zurich, Basel and Berne.

He has led several research projects and lectured at universities in Switzerland and Germany. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, is well connected with other senior figures in the industry and speaks fluent English, German and French.

Günther Stefan

Project Management Expert

Günther Stefan has been working in project management for over 20 years. He is an expert in project management, organisational consulting and in the management of tendering processes.

A qualified architect, Günther supports amd.sigma’s team in the field of project management as well as in the management of tendering procedures. Over the last 10 years, he has been involved in airport projects in Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg. Notably, he consulted regarding the planning and construction of several air traffic control towers which presented highly complex technical challenges.

From 1995 to 2001, Günther worked at Hanz Lechner GmbH in Vienna where he became a managing partner. He held the same position from 2007 to 2012 at airport project management (apm), a Frankfurt-based company specialised in airport project management. In 2011, he founded next-pm ZT GmbH, a management consultancy firm that specialises in complex building projects.

Gerhard Brandl und Manfred Wiesbauer

Airport Business Planning Experts

Gerhard and Manfred are two of the leading European experts in airport business planning. They have been involved in over 30 airport privatisation projects and, for the last ten years, have worked as regular external consultants for adm and amd.sigma. Their focus is on business plan consulting, financial analysis and controlling, cost estimation (CAPEX and OPEX) and strategic consulting.

They both previously worked in the finance department of Vienna Airport as well as in the finance or financial controlling departments of several other companies. Gerhard and Manfred are also managing partners of business.plan.consulting (bpc), a management consultancy firm that specialises in international airport projects.
