Munich airport: Long-lasting quality by design
With more than 46 million passengers each year, Munich airport numbers among the most highly frequented European aviation hubs – and the most popular. Munich is the only airport in Europe to have received a 5-Star Airport rating from the London-based Skytrax Institute. Maintaining that prestigious title presents a vital consideration for terminal 1 (T1) masterplan study.
In a project running from July to December 2019, amd.sigma will develop a masterplan study to ensure the future-proof development of T1 until 2035 and well into the future. Stretching over a length of nearly 1100 metres, T1 consists of five modules that provide the entire range of processing steps for both outgoing and incoming passenger flows. Currently, the terminal handles all flights operated by carriers other than Lufthansa or their partners.
The masterplanning process will take place in three phases. In phase 1, amd.sigma will review all functional units in the terminal to assess their fit with the ambitious quality standards of Munich airport. Phase 2 will involve the creation of three different masterplan concepts along with corresponding measures. Another critical challenge: as of 2023, all non-Schengen passenger flows will move through a concourse, a change that will require a whole new traffic concept for T1. In phase 3, a final masterplan vision will be developed for after 2035, taking into account the lifecycle of the passenger terminal.
